How much of our water heating energy needs could be solar?

During the summer months as much as 100% of the energy needed could be provided by solar. In winter, despite the lower intensity of the suns rays and fewer daylight hours as much as 30% could be solar. On average throughout the year up to 70% of a dwellings hot water requirement can be provided by solar power.

From 10th April 2010 the Government pilot scheme will enable households and communities to install generated technologies and to claim payments for the low-carbon electricity they produce.

A well designed solar water heating system will be able to provide up to a third of your home's annual hot water needs.

Solar water heating systems can usually be integrated into your existing hot water system.

Installation costs vary between £4,000 - £6,000 however, grants are available by contacting your local Energy Saving Trust on 0800 512 012.
